Coined by sociologist William Peterson in the January 1966 ed
ition of The New York Times Magazine\, "model minority" originally describ
ed the apparent socioeconomic success of Japanese Americans in spite of so
cial marginalization. Over the years\, the term has grown to include all A
sian American and Pacific Islanders\, particularly East Asians (Japanese\,
Chinese\, and Korean Americans) as well as South Asian Americans (namely
Indian Americans). The harm of the "model minority" label is masked behind
seemingly positive stereotypes intended to compliment\, such as attributi
ng intelligence and/or success to genetics\, cultural values\, and family
structures. These stereotypes not only suggest there are "good" and "bad"
kinds of Americans (as well as "problem minorities")\, but flattens the di
verse experiences of Asian Americans into an incredibly narrow narrative.<

This panel aims to create a space in which we discuss and help dis mantle the harmful effects of "model minority" stereotypes in our own comm unities.
