This 5 month series covers beginning the basics of genealogy.&nbs p\;The intention is to educate attendees on the basics of researching thei r family histories. \; Participants will learn basic genealogy vocabul ary\, discuss how to get started\, obtain organizational tools\, acquire e ffective online communication techniques\, and learn about research basics and vital records such as birth\, church\, marriage\, and death certifica tes. Other sessions will provide attendees workshops on topics like family heirlooms\, memoirs\, military records\, and government documents such as the National Archives\, Library of Congress\, ethnic family history websi tes\, medical genealogy\, the National Afro American Historical and Geneal ogical Society\, the Genealogical Society of Broward County\, History Ft. Abou t the African American Research Library and Cultural Center \;

\n

The \;Broward County African American Research Library and C ultural Center \;(AARLCC) \;is located in the Sistrunk community\, one of the oldest historically Black communities named for one of Fort La uderdale&rsquo\;s first Black physicians. Opening to the public on October 26\, 2002\, AARLCC became the third public library of its kind in the Uni ted States dedicated to the study of Black history and culture. The 60\,00 0 square-foot Center serves as a repository of materials related to the lo cal\, national\, and international voices of the African diaspora with mor e than 85\,000 books\, manuscripts\, artifacts\, framed art\, print\, phot ography\, audiovisual\, and documents held in our Adult Services Section a nd Special Collections. The Youth Services Section features a special coll ection of Coretta Scott King Award books and the \;Ashley Bryan Art Co llection \;from illustrators of African Descent. AARLCC also features a 5\,000 sq. ft. museum\, a 300-seat state-of-the-art theatre\, and a Comp uter Training Center.
