Linus Baker has resigned himself to his du ll\, lonely existence as a caseworker for the Department in Charge of Magi cal Youth\, overseeing the well-being of magical children placed in state- run orphanages. His dreary life is suddenly upended by a new assignment: h e is asked to travel to a distant island to assess the potential danger po sed to the community by six magical children with special powers. As Linus gets to know the children and their caretakers\, he begins to challenge h is preconceived notions and societal assumptions he has held all his life. His view of himself and his world expands in beautiful and unexpected way s. Klune&rsquo\;s modern-day fairy tale provides a quirky and endearing po rtrait of what can happen when humans begin to question their judgments of others based upon appearance\, assumptions\, prejudice\, and fear. Ultima tely\, it is a hopeful tale about learning to challenge preconceived biase s and celebrate our differences\, as everyone deserves to feel safe\, prot ected\, and even loved.
