 anica Roem serves her&nbsp\;lifelong home community of western Prince Will
 iam County and the greater Manassas area in her seventh year as a member o
 f the Virginia General Assembly. She spent more than nine years covering t
 he area for the&nbsp\;Prince William Times&nbsp\;and&nbsp\;Gainesville Tim
 es&nbsp\;from 2006 - 2015 before working as the news editor of the&nbsp\;M
 ontgomery County Sentinel&nbsp\;from 2015 until the end of 2016.</p>\n<p>S
 enator Roem earned seven Virginia Press Association awards for her news re
 porting and twice placed as runner-up for the James S. Keat Freedom of Inf
 ormation award from the Maryland\, Delaware and District of Columbia Press
  Association. She also covered federal and state campaigns for The Hotline
  in Washington\, D.C.\, fronted a heavy metal band from 2006-2015 and ran 
 a mobile yoga studio set to a heavy metal soundtrack in 2014.</p>\n<p>In 2
 017\, Senator Roem earned election to the 13th District of the Virginia Ho
 use of Delegates by unseating the self-described "chief homophobe" of Virg
 inia to flip a seat from Red to Blue\, becoming the first out-and-seated t
 ransgender state legislator in American history. She then earned re-electi
 on in 2019 and 2021 before winning election to the battleground 30th Distr
 ict of the state Senate in 2023. In 2022\, Viking Books released her debut
  book: <em>Burn the Page: A True Story of Torching Doubts\, Blazing Trails
