  1821 in North Oxford\, Massachusetts Clara Barton (born Clarissa Harlowe)
  was the daughter of a prominent farmer and politician. From an early age 
 Clara showed a special skill in learning so that by age four she was spell
 ing complicated words. By the age of eleven Clara displayed in a gift for 
 nursing as she helped an older brother recover from a serious illness.</p>
 \n<p>Known as the "Angel of the Battlefield" Clara nursed and aided soldie
 rs at the front during the American Civil War. After the war Clara became 
 the president of the American Red Cross\, a position she held for twenty-t
 wo years.</p>\n<p>Join us as an historical interpreter from Women in Histo
