\nDr. Biggar is an internationally recognized expert on HIV/AIDS. As an infectious disease specialist and medical epidemiologist at the Nati onal Institute of Health\, he set up many of the earliest studies of this mysterious disease\, beginning in 1981\, just as the first cases were bein g reported. His studies documented its devastating course and revealed its routes of transmission\, critical information leading to the discovery of the cause of AIDS. He helped break open the emerging tragedy of the epide mic in Africa and its spread around the world. Taking us to the current er a\, he explains the dimensions of our current American and global AIDS pro blem\, one of the greatest public health disasters of our time.
\nDr . Biggar is now retired and lives in the Edgemoor community of Bethesda. D uring his career\, he has lived and worked in Ghana\, Denmark\, India\, Fr ance\, and Australia. He has published more than 350 articles in the medic al literature and three books on HIV/AIDS for medical professionals.
