This Conservation @ Home program is all ab out creating more eco-friendly yards! The &ldquo\;typical&rdquo\; yard can easily be improved to help reduce water run-off\, increase wildlife habit at\, and improve the soil. The benefits of improving the environment are m any including\, reducing your water use\, creating more area for birds and butterflies\, reducing chemical use\, less lawn mowing\, and learning abo ut invasive species that may need to be controlled in your yard. This educ ation program will cover a variety of techniques for transforming your yar d\, including the use of Rain Barrels\, Rain Gardens\, and the selection a nd use of native plants to solve yard problems. Native plants grow natural ly and need no watering or fertilizers once established. Native plants thr ive on their own and do well\, even during drought conditions. Their deep roots hold the soil\, allow water to filter down deep into the ground wher e it belongs and\, because they &ldquo\;evolved&rdquo\; here\, they attrac t dozens of species of beneficial wildlife such as butterflies and songbir ds.
\nParticipants will receive a butterfly attraction and identific ation pamphlet\, and native plant guide.
\nThe Conservation Foundati on is a private\, not-for-profit land and watershed conservation organizat ion based in Naperville. Its mission is to enhance the quality of life by preserving open space\, protecting natural lands and improving rivers and watersheds. Nearly 4\,000 members and over 500 volunteers support this mis sion in DuPage\, Kane\, Kendall and Will Counties.
