The Kentucky Room first began at the publi c library in April\, 1949\, with the creation of the rare books vault\, an d opened to the public that August. Since that time\, the "Kentuckiana col lection" has expanded to over 17\,000 items\, including books\, local musi c\, old newspapers\, and local objects and records. Staff have created a l ocal history index for researchers\, a digital archive\, history podcast\, and downloadable walking tours for public use\, and have helped researche rs locally and worldwide\, with tens of thousands of questions. The collec tion has some items that are hundreds of years old\, and many of the items were generously donated by the community. Local school groups and interna tional researchers use the Kentucky Room to connect and learn about their roots.
