and a frequent speaker on African American and Afro Latino history and pol
itics. She is a staff reporter with the New York Amsterdam News where her
news reporting widens the knowledge about Black communities in the America
s. Carrillo has garnered awards from the New York Association of Black Jou
rnalists\, New California Media Awards\, and the National Newspapers Publi
shers Association.
Carrillo is co-founder of the website www.Afropres
encia.org\, which she started to help promote the dissemination of informa
tion about people of African descent in the Americas. AfroPresencia is a U
nited Nations-accredited NGO\; one of its missions is to help organize gra
ssroots groups that are working to provide aid to people of African descen
t. Carrillo regularly publishes news articles\, some of which you can see
here.
