Although these earthworks are not designat ed World Heritage sites\, they are no less important to gaining a better u nderstanding of the construction and use of these places by indigenous peo ple in the Ohio River valley some 2\,000 - 1\,600 years ago. This presenta tion will discuss Heartland Earthworks Conservancy's research at other ear thworks in Licking County and beyond using noninvasive archaeological geop hysical survey methods to find "destroyed" and previously unknown earthwor ks\, what we learn about them when doing so\, and our work with landowners to preserve and interpret these important places.
\nAl Tonetti is P resident of Heartland Earthworks Conservancy\, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organ ization whose mission is to advance the preservation of ancient earthworks in southern Ohio. Mr. Tonetti is a former President of and current Truste e and Chair of the Government Affairs Committee of the Ohio Archaeological Council\, a nonprofit organization representing the interests of professi onal archaeologists working in Ohio. In 1974\, Al began working as an arch aeologist while a graduate student at Ball State University. Before he "re tired" in 2017\, Mr. Tonetti spent over two decades as Cultural Resources Specialist in Archaeology and History\, and Safety and Education Coordinat or\, at ASC Group\, Inc.\, a private\, for-profit consulting firm headquar tered in Columbus. For 15 years\, he was the Archaeology Survey Manager at Ohio's State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO)\, and prior to that thre e years as SHPOs Regional Archaeologist at Wright State University\, and t hree years as an archaeologist for the Indiana Department of Transportatio n.
