Maude (1883-1993): She Grew Up with the Country< /a>
\nDuring her 110-year lifetime\, Maude Allen Williams went from oil lamps to a microwave oven\, from the horse and buggy to an automobile. She stepped onto an airplane for the first time at age 77 and flew to Pho enix\, Arizona to visit her daughter.
\nMaude was the first of her O hio family to receive a high school education. She married at 19 and moved to a farmhouse on the banks of Rush Creek in Fairfield County\, Ohio. She had neither electricity nor running water. Washing clothes in a tub\, can ning the fruits and vegetables from the garden\, and sewing the children&r squo\;s clothes by hand were done by oil lamp.
\nMaude lived simply\ , suffered hardships\, took in stride the time-consuming hand-work labor o f the early 1900s. When she died at the age of 110\, she left her family w ith an enduring memory of her patience\, kindness\, courage\, and her acce ptance of the conditions over which she had no control.
