For centuries\, women were excluded from a rt academies\, life drawing classes\, and the careers of professional arti sts. Even so\, many women still found ways to learn to paint and much of t heir work is being rediscovered.
\nIn this virtual talk\, Erin Barte ls will outline the life and work of four female artists in France in the late 1800s who\, while contemporaries of one another\, approached their ar t and their lives in different ways as they attempted to navigate societal restrictions and cultural expectations of what women should do and what t hey were even capable of doing. Then she'll bring the issue into the prese nt\, unpacking the ways we all tend to restrict ourselves from creating an d sharing our creations today\, even though societal norms have changed an d we enjoy unprecedented freedom to choose. She'll also talk briefly about how her exploration of women artists made its way into her latest novel\, The Lady with the Dark Hair.
