Excavations beneath the floor of a kitchen addition to a house of uncertain date at Jerusalem Mills\, Gunpowder Fall s State Park\, revealed more than decades of domestic debris\, some dating to the early 19th century. A stone foundation clearly indicated an earlie r building. When was it built\, why was it replaced? Smithsonian Environme ntal Archaeology Laboratory teamed with members of the Friends of Jerusale m Mills and the Archeological Society of the Northern Chesapeake to find t he answers. This illustrated talk introduces the preserved mill village of which the Lee-Pullen House is a part\, the reasons for our investigation\ , our results\, and our future goals.
