For more than two millennia\, philosophers \, and theologians have written about the nature of humility. Psychologica l research on humility indicates that it can enhance well-being and the ab ility to function socially. Worthington et al. observe that &ldquo\;alongs ide compassion\, forgiveness\, altruism\, gratitude\, and empathy\, humili ty belongs to &lsquo\;a cluster of virtues that bind society together&rsqu o\;&rdquo\; (Schaffner).
