Marc Garneau\, pioneering astronaut and il lustrious statesperson\, visits Burlington to launch his riveting\, many-s toried memoir in vivid conversation with award-winning author Terry Fallis .
\nOn October 5\, 1984\, astronaut Marc Garneau boldly went where n o Canadian had gone before! Blasting off from the Kennedy Space Center abo ard the U.S. Space Shuttle and reaching a speed of 28\,000 km/hour\, he be came the first Canadian to fly to outer space.
\nThat monumental ach ievement\, now etched in Canadian history as one of our country&rsquo\;s p roudest moments\, inspired a nation and ushered in a new era of space expl oration for Canada. Twenty-four years later\, Garneau made history yet aga in\, becoming the first astronaut to be elected as a Member of Parliament.
\nNow\, on the 40th anniversary of his historic space flight\, we a re thrilled to welcome Marc Garneau to Burlington\, in this special Cultur e Days event presented in partnership with Signal Books and A Different Dr ummer Books. \;

With candour and h umour\, Garneau describes the highs and lows of his life and career\, incl uding the awe he experienced first seeing the earth from space\, the tragi c loss of his first wife to mental illness and suicide\, sailing across th e Atlantic and back in a sailboat called &ldquo\;the Pickle\,&rdquo\; and witnessing the tragedy of the doomed shuttle Challenger.
