The Malibu Library Speaker Series presents Dr. Safiya Noble at Malibu Library on Tuesday\, September 17\, 2024 at 7 pm. Dr. Noble is a 2021 MacArthur Fellow\, a recipient of the NAACP-Archew ell Digital Civil Rights Award\, and author of the highly acclaimed Al gorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism. She is a n internet studies scholar and professor of Gender Studies and African Ame rican Studies at UCLA\, where she serves as the faculty director for the C enter on Race &\; Digital Justice and the co-director for the Minderoo Initiative on Tech &\; Power\, and where she co-founded the UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry.
\nDr. Noble and her work have been f eatured in Time\, The Guardian\, the BBC\, CNN Internati onal\, Wired\, The New York Times\, and Rolling Ston e\, among many others. Her talks and research focus on the ways that digital media impacts our lives and intersects with issues of race\, gende r\, culture\, and technology.
\nThe landscape of information is rapi dly shifting as new imperatives and demands push to the fore increasing in vestment in digital technologies. Yet\, critical information scholars cont inue to demonstrate how digital technology and its narratives are shaped b y and infused with values that are not impartial. In this talk\, Dr. Noble will discuss her book Algorithms of Oppression and delve into is sues ranging from marginalization and misrepresentation in commercial info rmation platforms like Google search\, to the profound power struggles tha t violate civil\, human\, and collective rights through AI and machine lea rning projects.
