DESCRIPTION:Explore magical realism and the genre&#39\;s influence on lite
rature.\nJoin us for an engaging presentation on the literary genre of mag
ical realism. We will explore the key characteristics of this unique style
of storytelling that blends realistic settings and characters with elemen
ts of fantasy and myth.\nMagical realism arose in Latin American literatur
e in the mid-20th century and has since spread around the world. In magica
l realist works\, supernatural events and imagery are incorporated into ot
herwise ordinary narratives in a matter-of-fact way. The author makes no a
ttempt to justify or explain the magical elements - they simply occur as p
art of the story.\nIn this presentation\, well discuss seminal magical
realist novels like Gabriel Garcia Marquez&#39\;s &lt\;em&gt\;One Hundred
 Years of Solitude&lt\;/em&gt\; and Isabel Allende&#39\;s &lt\;em&gt\;The H
ouse of the Spirits&lt\;/em&gt\;. We will examine how these works use magi
cal elements to comment on society and human nature.\nWe will also explore
the history of magical realism and its influence on contemporary world li
terature. Whether you are already a fan of Marquez and Allende or complete
ly new to magical realism\, this presentation will give you an engaging ov
erview of the genre and its significance.\nPlease join us for what promise
s to be an illuminating look at the spellbinding world of magical realist
fiction! Let yourself be transported by some of literature&#39\;s most enc
hanting stories.\nJoel Clements is a local writer and teacher. He has taug
ht literature and writing for Bend LaPine schools\, COCC\, and OSU-Cascade

the years. As a writer/performer\, he has contributed to multiple regional
