Have you encountered a roadblock in the paper trail? Are you unable to uncover the name of an ancestor or the location where your ances tors came from? Join us for a presentation on how to use the modern scienc e of genetic genealogy to help uncover the mysteries of the past. Through this program\, you will learn how to use the available DNA tools\, how to infer genetic relationships\, and how to uncover the names of ancestors hi dden in the records.

About the Presenter

\n

Phillip Nicholas is a professional genealogist specializing in Jamaican\, Barbadian\, and British genealogy and owns Genealogy Detective Caribbean\, LLC. He has presented for the Frederick County Public Library (FCPL)\, th e Allen County Public Library (ACPL)\, the Yonkers Public Library (YPL)\, Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL)\, the Clayton Library Center\, and RELIC at the Central Library where he discussed how to trace your Caribbean anc estry and the complexity of slavery. Phillip Nicholas has a Master of Libr ary and Information Science degree from the University of Maryland\, Colle ge Park and earned his Master of Arts in Comparative &\; Transnational History from the College of William &\; Mary. He has experience process ing\, researching\, and analyzing archival records. He wrote his thesis ab out the cultural transformations of enslaved people from the Gold Coast in 18th-century Jamaica. With his background in history\, he knows the value of understanding the historical context of an event and location when con ducting genealogy.

Miami-Dade Public Library Syste m&rsquo\;s Division of Special Collections &\; Archives holds rare and irreplaceable historical materials for the benefit of the public and schol arly community. They oversee the Helen Muir Florida Collection\, 16mm Film Collection\, Cuban Collection of Rare Books &\; Ephemera\, Genealogy C ollection\, Vasari Project archive\, and Rare &\; Antiquarian books fro m as early as the 17th century. The Division's primary goal is to provide the public with the contents of the vault at their request.
