At a time when American society is increas ingly polarized\, places of worship are helping to create social capital t hrough discussion groups\, soup kitchens\, and neighborhood clean-ups. Thr ough more than a decade of multi-method data collection\, Rebecca A. Glazi er surveyed over 4\,000 congregants and nearly 500 clergy in Little Rock\, Arkansas\, to gather opinions from members and leaders on community issue s and engagement. Together with interviews and case studies\, her findings indicate that community engagement is an overall positive for members and for democracy.
\nThese findings are presented in a new book\, F aith and Community\, which provides valuable insights into the relati onship between religion and community engagement. In this Legacies &\; Lunch presentation\, Glazier will describe how community engagement benefi ts individuals\, congregations\, and democracy&mdash\;making it particular ly relevant in this political season. \; \;
