X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:<p>What They Saw: Historical Photobooks by Wo
men Reading Room is a touring exhibition highlighting historically signifi
cant but often overlooked photobooks by women.</p>\n<p>The exhibition expl
ores a relatively new field of study&mdash\;photobook history&mdash\;where
women's contributions have often been under-recognized. While the first m
ajor &ldquo\;book-on-books&rdquo\; anthology appeared in 1999 with Fotogra
 f&iacute\;a P&uacute\;blica / Photography in Print 1919&ndash\;1939\, phot
obooks by women have remained underrepresented in these collections despit
e the field's growth over the past two decades.</p>\n<p>The What They Saw
Reading Room revisits photobook history from a female perspective\, featur
ing a diverse range of works created between 1843 and 1999. These works sp
an continents\, cultures\, and artistic styles\, and include traditional b
 ound books\, portfolios\, personal albums\, zines\, scrapbooks\, and unpub
lished works. The exhibition also addresses the critical gaps in photobook
history\, especially the underrepresentation of non-Western women and wom
en of color.</p>\n<p>As part of the 2024 WOPHA Congress\, the Miami editio
n will also feature photobooks by contemporary South Florida women photogr
aphers\, highlighting their ongoing contributions to the field.</p>\n<p>Wh
at They Saw: Historical Photobooks by Women Reading Room and its accompany
ing publication is a visionary project conceived by 10&times\;10 Photobook
s and brought to Miami through a partnership with Women Photographers Inte
rnational Archive (WOPHA) &nbsp\;and the Miami-Dade Public Library System.
Following successful showings at the New York Public Library and the Muse
o Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sof&iacute\;a\, WOPHA is thrilled to bring
this pioneering exhibition to Miami-Dade Public Library as part of the se
cond edition of the WOPHA Congress\, How Photography Teaches Us to Live No
 w. The Miami reading room is curated by Amanda Bradley and Zonia Zena\, wi
th guidance from Aldeide Delgado\, Russet Lederman\, and Olga Yatskevich.<
