Mississippi Freedom Summer helped change A merica. \; Hundreds of lawyers\, clergy\, doctors and entertainers cam e into Mississippi at the invitation \;of the Student \;Non Violen t \;Coordinating Committee (SNCC). \; SNCC also recruited and trai ned around 500 students to come to try to "open up Mississippi."  \;Th ree of those volunteers\, Mickey Schwerner\, Andrew Goodman and James Chan ey were murdered. \; Brooks Smith\, a sophomore at Wesleyan University also volunteered to "open up Mississippi." \; Mr. Smith will share hi s experiences going door to door doing voter registration\, being threaten ed and arrested\, and living next door to Fannie Lou Hamer.
