\nMarch is Women's History Month. \;
\nDr. Mary Walker\, the s ole female recipient of the Medal of Honor\, once vowed\, "I will always b e somebody." She enrolled in medical school at a time when few admitted wo men and\, shortly after the outbreak of the Civil War\, she requested a co mmission to serve in the U.S. Army as a medical officer. Repeatedly denied a commission because of her gender\, Dr. Walker worked as a volunteer sur geon until 1864\, when she was finally hired on a contract with the army. President Andrew Johnson awarded her the Medal of Honor in 1865\, determin ing that she &ldquo\;rendered valuable service to the Government\, and her efforts have been earnest and untiring in a variety of ways.&rdquo\; Afte r the war\, Dr. Walker devoted her life to furthering the cause of women's rights and became an important\, if controversial\, figure in the women's suffrage movement. \;
\nShe was well known in her lifetime\, bu t knowledge of her accomplishments nearly faded away until the late 20th c entury.
