  Month and Military Family Month\, Alexandra N. Harris\, senior editor at 
 the Smithsonian&rsquo\;s National Museum of the American Indian\, will dis
 cuss the book and exhibition she co-authored with Dr. Mark Hirsch\, entitl
 ed Why We Serve: Native Americans in the United States Armed Forces (2020)
 . Published in conjunction with the establishment of the National Native A
 merican Veterans Memorial on the museum&rsquo\;s grounds\, Why We Serve ch
 ronicles the long history of service by American Indians\, Alaska Natives\
 , and Native Hawaiians in the US military. Harris will discuss the book&rs
 quo\;s major themes and touch on significant contributions made by Indigen
 ous service members.</p>\n<p>Alexandra A. Harris is a senior editor at the
  Smithsonian&rsquo\;s National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI)\, wher
 e she writes and edits exhibitions\, their companion books\, and other sch
 olarly publications. She is a graduate of the Smithsonian&rsquo\;s Emergin
 g Leaders Development Program and her editorial projects have earned award
 s for excellence in research from the Secretary of the Smithsonian. Prior 
 to her work at the Smithsonian\, she was a curator at the Barona Cultural 
 Center and Museum\, the tribal museum of the Barona Band of Mission Indian
 s\, and taught college courses on American Indian and California Indian cu
 lture and history. She graduated from UCLA with a B.A. in Psychology and M
 .A. in American Indian Studies.</p>\n<p>This program is sponsored by Frien
