Beyond the Kitsch: The Pervasive Spirit of our Indigenous Creative Commun ity

Throughout the Southwest\, tourists and locals encoun ter a range of Indigenous art\, from manufactured and imported cultural ap propriations to fine art in galleries and museums. The state&rsquo\;s crea tive Indigenous communities are sometimes lost in what is popularly featur ed as Native American Art. In this presentation\, Diné\; jeweler Nan ibaa Beck will highlight contemporary Native American Art\, focusing on ec lectic indigenous creatives throughout Arizona and beyond. Beck draws exam ples from her friends\, family\, and extended kin to demonstrate the diver sity of artistic talents\, mediums\, and philosophical approaches of Indig enous artists. The presentation will leave participants with a better appr eciation for the range of Native American creativity the state has to offe r.
