X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:<p>Women ragtime composers faced challenges &
ndash\; it wasn&rsquo\;t considered very &ldquo\;ladylike&rdquo\; to write
this kind of music\, and once they got married\, they were expected to gi
ve up their composing career and raise a family. May Aufderheide&rsquo\;s
family was appalled when she presented them with a ragtime score\, and Cha
rlotte Blake&rsquo\;s publishers were afraid to put her first name on her
music. Eventually these women became some of the most popular composers of
their day. Another composer\, Irene Giblin\, got her start demonstrating
sheet music in a St. Louis department store. Along with that we&rsquo\;ll
meet some famous singers\; vaudeville performer Sophie Tucker had an unusu
al rag written especially for her.</p>\n<p>R = Registration required.</p>\
