 generous donation from the Friends of the Library.</p>\n<p>David Hume was 
 a leading figure of the Scottish Enlightenment. Never an academic philosop
 her\, Hume was rather a man of letters and of affairs. He gave voice to ph
 ilosophical empiricism\, a conviction that knowledge must be based on dire
 ct sensory experience. His &ldquo\;An Enquiry Concerning Human Understandi
 ng\,&rdquo\; is a restatement in popular form of some of the ideas Hume ha
 d put forward in his long work &ldquo\;A Treatise of Human Nature.&rdquo\;
  The great German philosopher Immanuel Kant stated that Hume awakened him
