Suminagashi is a centuries-old paper marbl ing technique from Japan. Sumi ink and heavily diluted soap water are alte rnatively applied to the surface of a water bath using brushes to create c ontrasting light and dark rings. These rings can be manipulated to create whimsical and striking patterns that are then transferred to a piece of pa per. Like many things in Japan\, Suminagashi is a holistic art form. Movem ents and breathing play a key role in how the inks will interact and look when transferred. Participants will be creating their own Suminagashi piec es and come away with the knowledge of how to create this work on their ow n at home.
