 n<p>Maria Kelson has two collections of poetry (as Maria Melendez) with Un
 iversity of Arizona Press\, which were finalists for the PEN Center USA Li
 terary Award and the Colorado Book Award. Not the Killing Kind is her debu
 t novel. It received the inaugural Eleanor Taylor Bland Award for Crime Fi
 ction Writers of Color from Sisters in Crime.</p>\n<p>A former Santa Fe Ar
 ts Institute and Hedgebrook resident\, she has given readings and workshop
 s at campuses and literary festivals around the U.S. and served as an Amer
 ican Voices arts envoy in Bogot&aacute\;\, Colombia. Born in Arizona\, rai
 sed in northern California\, she has lived in one southeastern\, three mid
