Jack London was a man of many parts: sailo r\, self-educated author of 50 books (and the first American author to ear n a million dollars)\, war correspondent\, socialist\, and forward-thinkin g rancher. Photography was a lesser-known aspect of his prodigious activit y. London took some 12\,000 photos\, both during his journalistic exploits and his travels with wife Charmian. They form a fascinating record of a w orld unknown to most of his contemporaries\, with sharp composition\, an u nerring sense of drama\, and sympathetic respect for his subjects.
\nAvril Angevine is an arts lecturer with a particular interest in modern\, contemporary\, and California art. She speaks on many subjects at various locations in the Bay Area\, including the OLLI programs at Cal State East Bay\, Dominican College\, San Francisco State\, and the Fromm Institute. Avril has a BA in English and an MA in Comparative Literature from UC Berk eley and taught English and Humanities at local colleges. She is also a mu seum guide at SFMOMA\, the Oakland Museum\, and the Sonoma Valley Museum o f Art.
