Despite accounting for only seven percent of the holdings of New York&rsquo\;s Metropolitan Museum\, artworks by wom en are finally being celebrated in the art world. Understanding women&rsqu o\;s contributions to cultural life is overdue\, enriching\, and inspiring . Women explore the perennial art subjects: portraits\, genre scenes\, lan dscapes\, mythology\, and religious subjects\, but they also bring images found in women&rsquo\;s lives and experiences into art. Learn about five w omen who worked in Europe&rsquo\;s pre-Modern era: Levina Teerlinc\, Artem isia Gentileschi\, Mary Beale\, É\;lisabeth Vigé\;e Le Brun\, and Lavinia Fontana.
\nAvril Angevine is an arts lecturer with a par ticular interest in modern\, contemporary\, and California art. She speaks on many subjects at various locations in the Bay Area\, including the OLL I programs at Cal State East Bay\, Dominican College\, San Francisco State \, and the Fromm Institute. Avril has a BA in English and an MA in Compara tive Literature from UC Berkeley and taught English and Humanities at loca l colleges. She is also a museum guide at SFMOMA\, the Oakland Museum\, an d the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art.
