Culture\, History\, and Society: H istoric Indianapolis Metropolitan Area Connections&mdash\;Indiana polis Educator Nikia Garland will share her personal and professional teac hing journey about the Holocaust. \;Her commitment deepened through a powerful visit to historical Holocaust sites in Europe. Additionally\, Nik ia will discuss her fellowship with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum\, where she accessed a host of invaluable teaching resources. She will \;intr oduce these materials and discuss how they enhance classroom understanding of this complex history. \;The presentation will conclude with an ove rview of the Holocaust's impact on Indianapolis' Jewish community. \nPresented by: \;Nikia D. Garland serves as the Literacy Coach and an AP English Langu age and Composition teacher at Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapol is\, IN. She brings extensive experience in English Language Arts\, having taught at the secondary\, international\, and higher education levels. Ni kia is a recipient of numerous distinguished awards and fellowships\, incl uding the Terry Fear Holocaust Educator in Action award\, the Mark Schonwe tter Holocaust Education Grant\, the Lilly Endowment Teacher Creativity Fe llowship\, the Fund for Teachers Fellowship\, the Grosvenor Teacher Fellow ship\, the National Book Foundation Fellowship\, the United States Holocau st Memorial Museum Teacher Fellowship\, and the Fulbright Fellowship. She also chairs the ITW conference and leads as president of the Indiana affil iate of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Nikia holds a B.S. in English Education\, an M.S. in Language Education\, a Reading Endo rsement\, an administrator&rsquo\;s license\, and several additional certi fications. Her work is driven by a passion for creating engaging lesson pl ans\, advocating for social justice\, and fostering student literacy devel opment.
