 lettre&raquo\;\, the first novel by Senegalese&nbsp\;writer Mariama B&acir
 c\;. A&nbsp\;semi-autobiographical&nbsp\;epistolary novel\, its theme is t
 he condition of women in Western African society. As the novel begins\, Ra
 matoulaye Fall is beginning a letter to her lifelong friend Aissatou B&aci
 rc\;. The occasion for writing is Ramatoulaye's recent widowhood. As she g
 ives her friend the details of her husband's death\, she recounts the majo
 r events in their lives.</p>\n<p>The novel is often used in literature cla
 sses focusing on women's roles in post-colonial Africa. It won the first&n
 bsp\;Noma Award for Publishing in Africa&nbsp\;in 1980.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>M
