X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:<p>Explore the world of typewriters through A
rtyping: Typewriter Books\, an imaginative exhibition featuring sculptural
pieces using physical components from typewriters\, such as ribbons\, spo
ols\, and keys\, alongside elements from their modern counterparts - compu
ters.</p>\n<p>Artist Claire Jeanine Satin thoroughly explores various them
es in her book works until she feels she has reached her desired goal. As
a result\, her series sometimes consists of only a few handmade and unique
volumes\, while other renditions extend into dozens. Many elements in her
works incorporate reused or repurposed items\, objects that intrigue her\
, and keepsakes from her travels.</p>\n<p>Since 2016\, typewriters have he
ld a special place in Satin&rsquo\;s artistic practice. Her father\, a tea
cher\, taught a typewriting course using author Julius Nelson's seminal 19
39 publication Artyping\, the first manual on using the typewriter to crea
te art. While typewriters were widely available in the United States from
the 1880s until their eventual replacement in the 1980s by computers\, Sat
in has been inspired by their beauty and actively keeps the legacy of thes
e iconic tools alive.</p>\n<p>Her Pentimento series\, named after the Ital
ian term for &ldquo\;the reappearance of an earlier image that has been ch
anged and painted over\,&rdquo\; includes early books dating back to 2002.
While there is no unifying leitmotif in the Pentimento series\, earlier w
orks occasionally feature typewriter-produced elements.</p>\n<p>Claire Jea
nine Satin (b. 1935) earned a Bachelor of Arts at Sarah Lawrence College i
n New York and a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture at Pratt Institute. She
is a multidisciplinary artist who has been creating artist books since the
1970s. As a true sculptor\, Satin uses a variety of media for her books:
 screen\, hand-cast paper\, metal\, transparencies\, and any substrate that
accommodates her vision. Her work is often inspired by the philosophy of
her late friend John Cage (1912&ndash\;1992)\, embracing chance and indete
rminacy. With such an approach\, even the simplest work can have limitless
  possibilities.</p>\nhttps://mdpls.libnet.info/event/12651709
