 stories of the enslaved laborers who built the University of Virginia. Dis
 cover how genealogical research uncovers hidden histories\, reconnects fam
 ilies\, and honors these individuals' legacies. Learn proven strategies fo
 r overcoming research challenges\, analyzing records of both enslavers and
  the enslaved\, and tracing descendant connections. Whether you&rsquo\;re 
 a genealogist\, historian\, or curious learner\, this session will equip y
 ou with practical tools and insights to preserve African American ancestry
  and ensure these vital stories are never forgotten.</p>\n<p>Dr. Shelley M
 urphy is the Descendant Project Researcher joining the Division for Divers
 ity\, Equity &amp\; Inclusion in March 2021.&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>Her background
  spans with nonprofit and local government work focused primarily on real 
 estate\, affordable housing and fair housing discrimination issues. An avi
 d genealogist for over 30 years\, Dr. Shelley Viola Murphy\, aka "familytr
 eegirl\," was born and raised in Michigan\, now living in central Virginia
 . She conducts genealogy workshops at local\, state and national conferenc
 es.&nbsp\;Murphy&nbsp\;is&nbsp\;known for her inspiring&nbsp\;&amp\; inter
 active "SO WHAT"&nbsp\;with genealogical research\, along with interesting
  problem-solving methodology lectures such as the use of Timelines.&nbsp\;
 </p>\n<p>Murphy is also&nbsp\;a coordinator&nbsp\;and&nbsp\;instructor at 
 the Midwest African American Genealogy Institute&nbsp\;(MAAGI)&nbsp\;and&n
 bsp\;serves on the Boards of the Library of Virginia. Albemarle Charlottes
 ville and Fluvanna Historical Societies.&nbsp\;She is the President\, Coor
 dinator and Instructor at the Midwest African American Genealogy Institute
  (MAAGI) and has developed educational programs for the Center for Family 
 History at the IAAM.&nbsp\;She holds membership in AAHGS NGS\, APG\,&nbsp\
 ;DAR\,&nbsp\;and local genealogy groups.&nbsp\;Dr. Murphy&rsquo\;s persona
 l research focuses on Michigan\, Indiana\, Ohio\, Virginia/West Virginia\,
