All plants will flower if provided the rig ht conditions - soil with nutrients\, sunlight\, water\, pollination. Huma n beings realize their fullest potential - much like the blooming of flowe rs - when certain conditions are met. One of these is a strong sense of se lf\, an awareness and acceptance of who we are\, where we are from. We hav e a better understanding of the broader human condition when we have a str ong sense of self. This leads to acceptance of others and an appreciation of our differences.
\nCultural awareness begins with an understandin g of our place in the world\, how we are influenced by the cultural groups we belong to. Culture influences how we think and how we act\, and we nee d to understand our own cultural identity before we can understand others. '
\nThanks to a generous grant from the \;Chelsea Community Foun dation\, the residents of St. Louis Center\, a residential community in Ch elsea for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities\, have b een on a year-long journey of cultural discovery. \;This \;1\,000 Flowers Could Bloom \;event is the capstone of this cultural awareness program. \;Together with the residents of St. Louis Center and the wi der community of interested individuals\, educator and clay artist Eli Zem per engaged folks with and without disabilities in creating their own cera mic flower stamped with words and images that describe their cultural iden tity. \;
