 art in three sections: masterworks by Thomas Eakins and Winslow Homer\, wh
 ose works captured the aspirations and apprehensions of a nation coming in
 to its own\; American modernist paintings that convey the ingenuity of art
 ists working amidst the tumult of the interwar years\; and color field pai
 nters\, who deemphasized gesture and active brushstrokes to distill the vo
