Explore the world of typewriters through A rtyping: Typewriter Books\, an imaginative exhibition featuring sculptural pieces using physical components from typewriters&mdash\;ribbons\, spools \, and keys&mdash\;alongside elements from their modern counterparts\, com puters.
\nArtist Claire Jeanine Satin thoroughly explores a theme in her book works until she feels she has reached her desired goal. As a res ult\, her series sometimes consists of only a few handmade and unique volu mes\, while others extend into dozens. Many elements in her works incorpor ate reused or repurposed items\, objects that intrigue her\, and keepsakes from her travels.
\nSince 2016\, typewriters have held a special pl ace in Satin&rsquo\;s artistic practice. Her father\, a teacher\, taught a typewriting course using author Julius Nelson's seminal 1939 publication Artyping\, the first manual on using the typewriter to create art. While t ypewriters were widely available in the United States from the 1880s until their eventual replacement in the 1980s by computers\, Satin has been ins pired by their beauty and actively keeps the legacy of this iconic tool al ive.
\nHer Pentimento series\, named after the Italian term for &ldq uo\;the reappearance of an earlier image that has been changed and painted over\,&rdquo\; includes some of the earliest books in this exhibit\, dati ng back to 2002. While there is no unifying leitmotif in the Pentimento se ries\, earlier works occasionally feature typewriter-produced elements.
