r of the Oglala Lakota Tribal Nation. His Lakota name\, TAMAKOCE TE&rsquo\
;HILA\, translates to "Loves His Country" or\, more traditionally\, "Respe
cts the Earth." Mills achieved Olympic glory by winning the gold medal in
the 10\,000-meter race at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics&mdash\;a victory conside
red one of the most remarkable moments in sports history. To this day\, he
remains the only athlete from the Western Hemisphere to claim gold in thi
s event.</p>\n<p>Billy experienced profound loss early in life\, losing hi
s mother at age eight and his father at twelve. Before passing\, his fathe
r left him with a powerful message:&nbsp\;<em>"You have broken wings\, son
\, and it takes a dream to heal. Find your dream\, and it will lead you to
a path filled with passions. Develop your skills to match your passion\,
and magic will happen. One or more of the magical things you do in life mi
ght even be seen as a miracle."</em></p>\n<p>Guided by his father&rsquo\;s
wisdom and the enduring strength of his ancestors\, Billy has dedicated h
is life to uplifting others. As the National Spokesperson for Running Stro
ng for American Indian Youth\, an organization he co-founded in 1986\, he
continues to honor their legacy\, inspiring future generations to chase th
eir dreams.</p>\n<p>Olympian Billy Mills will join us to discuss his amazi
 ng journey\, experiences and book\, "<a href="https://encore.akronlibrary.
