The \;EWU Racial \;Covenants Project \;an d the Spokane County Auditor&rsquo\;s Office\, will be hosting workshops w ith the support of Spokane Public Library\, to inform interested homeowner s and homebuyers how to file a Racial \;Covenant \;Amendment form on their working documents with their county Auditor&rsquo\;s office.

Historically\, racially restrictive \;covenants were legal agreeme nts written into property deeds and plat maps\, prohibiting people of cert ain racial and ethnic backgrounds from owning or occupying properties. Thi s practice was part of a broader system of racial segregation that persist ed throughout the early and mid-20th century in the United States. Althoug h these \;covenants were declared unenforceable by the Supreme Court i n 1948 and were rendered illegal by the Fair Housing Act of 1968\, their r emnants persist in property records today. \;

The \;Easter n Washington University (EWU) Racial \;Covenants Project \;is a gr oundbreaking research initiative that emerged from a need to address histo rical racial injustices embedded in property records. The project formally began in late 2021/early 2022\, following the passage of Washington State &rsquo\;s SHB 1335. This important piece of legislation assigned EWU and t he University of Washington (UW) the task of locating and informing homeow ners of racially restrictive property \;covenants recorded in property documents.

The Spokane County Audito r and a notary will be at this workshop to assist with completing your doc uments. If all homeowners are present with photo ID\, they will have the o pportunity to complete the documents that strike the racially restrictive language from their deed\, time permitting.
