Although the African American press has be en characterized as an instrument of protest for civil rights and full cit izenship rights for Black people in the United States\, particularly after World War II\, Dr. Debra Greene claims that from the late 19th century th rough World I\, this institution was an instrument of racial uplift. Join Dr. Green as she highlights how Missouri&rsquo\;s Black newspaper editors and publishers instructed the Black community in politics\, economic empow erment and community betterment.
\nDr. Greene holds a bachelor of ar ts degree in history from Alcorn State University in her home state of Mis sissippi and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in history from the University of Miss ouri-Columbia. During retirement\, she has published eight biographical sk etches for the African American National Biography\, including: one on her mother-in-law\, Dr. Thomasina Talley Greene\, the first woman of African descent to earn a doctorate in music in the United States\; Libby C. Antho ny\, an African American women&rsquo\;s social advocate from Jefferson Cit y\, Missouri\; and attorney Joseph L. McLemore\, the first Black man nomin ated on the Missouri Democratic ticket for Congress.
