Octavio Paz\, born to a family nearly laid to waste in the Mexican revolution\, would wear a revolving cast of masks throughout his life. In this lecture/workshop\, we'll explore two of thes e masks: the disillusioned political radical and the surrealist poet influ enced by lived experience with Eastern mystical traditions. Following a br ief introduction to Paz's life\, his key ideas\, and a few of his major wo rks\, we'll spend our time exploring some of his mystical and surrealist a pproaches to exploring &mdash\; and perhaps even liberating &mdash\; the s elf through poetry.
\nAbout the presenter: Taylor D. Waring is a wri ter\, musician\, occultist\, and educator dwelling in Spokane\, WA. He is an Assistant Professor of English at North Idaho College. His poetry has b een published internationally in journals like Wisconsin Review\, Tres tle Creek Review\, \;and \;2River\, and his music jo urnalism pops up in the Inlander every now and again. He is prece ded in death by his cat Disco (2020-2024).
