Pickens was also an accomplished oil paint er exhibiting at the Corcoran Museum\, Touchstone\, and Franz Bader Galler ies in Washington\, DC. Her drawings and paintings are in public and priva te collections across the nation. Her actions as a political activist in L oudoun County were enduring. She convinced the Board of Supervisors to cre ate the first Planning Commission for Loudoun County in 1942\, becoming it s first Chairman and working on the commission for 21 years. Pickens? effo rts to preserve Loudoun?s natural beauty resulted in the restriction of bi llboards in the County. She was also head of the commission during the con struction of \;Dulles Airport. She founded the Loudoun Sketch Club in 1944\, the oldest art club in Loudoun County\, and also served as an activ e member and chairman of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Art Advis ory Committee when it was established in 1978. These drawings are an impor tant part of the Loudoun County Art Collection. Launched in 1983\, the col lection features over 200 works of art donated by Loudoun artists and coll ectors.
