 ial scenic bikeways in a single year. This is a study of rural Oregon &mda
 sh\; the people\, the places\, and the discoveries that make cycling a uni
 que travel experience.&nbsp\;Stand in ruts created by countless wagons on 
 the Oregon Trail\, meet the owners of a ghost town\, pedal over the Cascad
 es\, bike through historic covered bridges\, and climb the state's oldest 
 standing lighthouse.</p>\n<p><strong>Dan Shryock</strong> is a Salem-based
  author and travel writer who focuses on cycle tourism. His work has appea
 red in magazines and websites in California and the Pacific Northwest\, in
 cluding <em>Bend Magazine</em>. He has explored back roads and hillsides a
 cross the western United States\, British Columbia\, England\, Italy\, Mex
 ico\, and New Zealand in search of unique bicycle adventures. He&rsquo\;s 
 also been known to savor a good espresso.</p>\n<p>A career journalist\, he
  served as a reporter and editor for newspapers in Indiana\, California\, 
 and Oregon. While working for the <em>Times-Advocate</em> in Escondido\, C
 alif.\, he teamed with colleagues to become Pulitzer Prize finalists (Expl
 anatory Journalism) in 1990. He later served as editor of the <em>Gazette-
 Times</em> in Corvallis and as digital media director of the <em>News-Regi
 ster</em> in McMinnville. He left the <em>News-Register</em> in 2015 and b
 egan this cycling/travel adventure\, and recently launched a digital publi
 cation on Substack titled &ldquo\;Why We Ride.&rdquo\; For more informatio
