 s\, photographers have documented the optimism associated with expanding o
 pportunities in the fine and performing arts\, sports\, entertainment and 
 civil\, social\, political and economic rights for many Americans. At the 
 same time\, a rich body of visual evidence also documents frustration with
  programs and policies that promised but failed to address persistent soci
 al issues.</p>\n<p>This program will focus on the social and cultural hist
 ory of Black Americans as reflected in the book-length publications of suc
 h well-known photographers as James Van Der Zee\, Gordon Parks and Deborah
  Willis while also considering more recent works that are included in "<a 
 href="https://www.wrhs.org/do-see/exhibitions/history-in-their-hands-black
 -photographers-in-cleveland-ohio-1968--present">History in Their Hands: Bl
 ack Photographers in Cleveland\, Ohio\, 1968 - Present</a>\," the inaugura
 l exhibition for the African American History Gallery at the Western Reser
 ve Historical Society that will be on view through August 2025.</p>\n<p>Pr
 esenter Dr. Regennia N. Williams serves as the Associate Curator of Africa
 n American Community Partnerships\, Programs\, and Traveling Exhibitions a
 nd the Distinguished Scholar of African American History and Culture at th
