\nEvery day needs a night. Life on Earth evolved under a regular cycle of dark ni ghts and bright days&ndash\;a rhythm that is encoded in all living things. We need light at night for human activity\, but poorly designed artificia l light at night is a wasteful pollutant and has serious impacts on natura l ecosystems and on our own human health. Join Dr. Bill Kowalik\, Chairper son of DarkSky Oregon\, for a thought-provoking presentation illustrating the increasing levels of light pollution across the state. Dr. Kowalik als o highlights a hopeful trend: communities\, parks\, and regions are beginn ing to recognize the ecological and economic value of preserving dark skie s.
\nABOUT THE PRESENTER
Bill Kowalik\, receiv
ed his B.S. in Earth and Planetary Sciences from the University of Pittsbu
rgh\, an M.S. in Geology from Pennsylvania State University and his Ph.D.
in Applied Earth Sciences from Stanford. He is a founding board member and
current Chairperson of DarkSky Oregon\, an organization dedicated to pres
erving &ldquo\;Oregon&rsquo\;s magnificent dark skies&rdquo\; and diminish
ing &ldquo\;light pollution for the health\, safety\, and well-being of al
l life.&rdquo\; Originally from Pennsylvania\, Dr. Kowalik has lived in Vi
rginia\, Colorado\, California\, Western Australia and now resides in Bend
. Bill has 35 years of industry experience in remote sensing\, exploration
and technology development.
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Oregon (OLLI-UO) in Central Oregon invites community members to participate in our Friday Talks in partnership with the Deschu tes Public Library. OLLI-UO is an intellectual and social community of eng aged adult learners\, connecting members to university faculty and profess ionals in respective fields. A six-month or yearlong membership allows par ticipation in a variety of lectures\, courses\, peer-led study and discuss ion groups\, educational tours\, field trips\, and social events.
