DESCRIPTION:A conversation with Rachel Phan\n.\nhttps://bpl.libnet.info/ev
 ent/13459857
X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:<p>Rachel Phan's debut coming-of-age story\,
<em>Restaurant Kid\,</em> is a&nbsp\;warm and poignant narrative about fin
ding one&rsquo\;s self amidst the grind of restaurant life\, the cross-gen
erational immigrant experience\, and a daughter&rsquo\;s attempts to conne
ct with parents who have always been just out of reach.</p>\n<p>When she w
as three years old\, Rachel Phan met her replacement. Instead of a new sib
ling\, her mother and father&rsquo\;s time and attention were suddenly dev
oted entirely to their new family restaurant. For her parents&mdash\;whose
own families fled China during Japanese occupation and then survived bomb
s and starvation during the war in Vietnam&mdash\;it was a dream come true
. For Phan\, it was something quite different. Overnight\, she became a re
staurant kid\, living on the periphery of her own family and trying her be
st to stay out of the way.</p>\n<p>Phan deftly combines candour\, wit and
insight to craft a vibrant and important narrative on the strength and foi
bles of family\, and how we come to understand ourselves.</p>\n<p>A Differ
ent Drummer Books will be on site with books for sale and signing after th
 e talk.</p>\n<p>Presented in partnership with Douglas &amp\; McIntyre</p>\
