\nCurrently\, over 600 measles cases have been reported in the United States. Measles is caused by a very conta gious virus that can lead to \;symptoms such as high fever\, rash\, pa inful swallowing\, and ear infections. Serious complications such as pneum onia\, seizures\, brain damage\, deafness and death may occur. The \;b est \;way to protect against measles is through vaccination&mdash\;two \;doses of MMR (measles\, mumps\, rubella) vaccine provide 97% protec tion against measles!
\nChildren should get their first dose of the MMR vaccine at one year old and their second dose at four to six years old . The Department of Health will be providing MMR vaccines to children ages 1-18 who are due for their first or second dose. The vaccine is free with most insurance plans\, and for children without insurance the cost will b e waived. The immunization process typically takes 15 minutes\, but provid es a lifetime of protection.
