 nspired collage compositions. The word Chigiri-e comes from the Japanese w
 ords chigiru (to tear) and e (picture)\, highlighting the unique technique
  of carefully layering pieces of colored washi or rice paper\, instead of 
 using dense paint or rough brush strokes. The results are stunning artwork
 s with rich texture\, subtle gradations\, and a softness that often resemb
 les watercolor.</p>\n<p>Rooted in themes of nature\, harmony\, and imperma
 nence\, Chigiri-e captures fleeting moments&mdash\;blooming flowers\, shif
 ting landscapes\, tender animals&mdash\;and preserves them in the timeless
  beauty of handmade paper.</p>\n<p>About the Artist</p>\n<p>Yuki Kohyama w
 as born in 1923 in the city of Iga in the Mie Prefecture of Japan. Raised 
 in a family of Japanese rice farmers\, she grew up surrounded by nature an
 d seasonal rhythms of rural life. At 75-years-old\, she began exploring th
 e intricate technique of Chigiri-e\, developing a personal style centered 
 on nature\, including flowers\, fruits\, vegetables\, landscapes\, and ani
 mals. Kohyama continues to work with colored rice paper as her preferred m
 edium. She is the author of a self-published autobiography titled Iga to k
 oga ni ikite\, translated in English as Having Lived in Both Cities of Iga
