On June 12\, 2025\, Israel launched Operat ion Rising Lion\, carrying out a series of coordinated air strikes and dro ne attacks on dozens of targets in Iran\, hitting Iranian nuclear faciliti es\, military bases\, and energy infrastructure. On June 21\, following mo re than a week of speculation about whether the United States would join I srael's assault\, U.S. aircraft and submarines carried out strikes on Iran 's three nuclear facilities\, one of which is built deep within a mountain \, using "bunker-buster" bombs that only the United States possesses and w hich only U.S. aircraft can carry. The strikes upended more than two decad es of U.S. strategy toward Iran\, in which several consecutive presidents had relied on diplomacy and sanctions to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran but shied from military action for fear of unleashing a larger war.
