Efré\;n Nava's three-generat ional Mexican American family is close-knit and hardworking\, but his parents harbor a secret. Once it is discovered\, Efré\;n must t ake on unusual responsibilities for a boy his age and try to navigate life across both physical and cultural borders between two countries. In obser vance of National Hispanic Heritage Month\, this month we will discuss Ern esto Cisnero's "Efré\;n Divided\," the 2021 medal winner of the Pura Belpré\; Award for "outstanding works of literature for children an d young adults that best portray\, affirm\, and celebrate the Latino cultu ral experience."

\nIf y ou are in grades 4\, 5 or 6 and love to read and have fun talking about bo oks and characters\, No Shelf Control is the place for you! Over the cours e of the school year\, we&rsquo\;ll read books from a wide range of genres &mdash\;realistic fiction\, mystery\, humor\, science fiction\, fantasy\, adventure&mdash\;featuring characters your age and themes such as friendsh ip\, family\, overcoming adversity\, confronting challenges\, sorting thro ugh conflicting values\, and navigating life\, school\, sports and other e xtracurricular activities\, other people&rsquo\;s expectations\, and their expanding knowledge of themselves and the world around them. We often use new books published within the last 2-3 years and acclaimed titles from s uch award programs as the Black-Eyed Susan. Each session&rsquo\;s interact ive discussions and hands-on activities will relate to the major topics an d themes of the book in a fun and engaging way. Each month\, you can borro w a copy of the assigned book (with a specially prepared reading guide jus t for our group) from the Connie Morella Library. You can also access many of the titles as e-books or e-audiobooks through the library&rsquo\;s fre e app\, Hoopla and Libby. \;
\nLibrary Program Attendanc e (both virtual and in the branch) is limited to participants wit hin the suggested age range of the program. Children attending an MCPL pro gram under the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult. Adults attending a program intended for children must have an accompanying child.
